How to photograph construction defects
A defect photo is only as useful as what it proves. A tight close-up of a crack with nothing around it says nothing about where it is or how serious it is; a wide shot with no detail says nothing about the defect itself. Good defect photography answers what it is, where it is, and how big — every time — so the image still means something when someone opens it a year later. This is how to shoot defects that carry weight as evidence.

Step by step
Shoot an establishing wide shot first
Before you zoom in, capture the whole area so the defect can be located in the room or assembly. A close-up with no context can't be placed, and "where was this?" is the first thing anyone asks.
Then capture the detail close-up
Move in on the actual defect so the condition is unmistakable — the crack, the gap, the missing fastener, the coating holiday. The pair of wide-then-tight is what ties the detail to a place.
Include a scale reference
Put a tape, a coin, a marker, or a crack gauge in the frame so the size reads objectively. "A big crack" is an opinion; a crack next to a ruler is a measurement.
Get the light and focus right
Shoot in enough light, hold focus on the defect, and use raking light or a flashlight across the surface for things like cracks, lippage and finish flaws that flat light hides. A blurry, dark photo proves nothing.
Tie the photo to a location
Tag the image to the room, grid, or QR-tagged assembly it belongs to. A defect photo that isn't anchored to a place is nearly useless when it's time to verify or dispute it.
Preserve an honest date and time
The moment a defect was documented matters as much as the defect. A timestamp captured at the shot — not typed in later — is what lets the photo anchor a timeline and connect to the daily report and the NCR.
Shoot the correction the same way
When the defect is fixed, photograph the corrected condition from the same vantage and location. The before-and-after pair, tied to the same spot, is what closes the item as proven rather than promised.
What gets missed
- Close-ups with no wide shot, so the defect can't be located.
- No scale in the frame, leaving size a matter of opinion.
- Flat lighting that hides cracks, lippage and coating flaws a raking light would reveal.
- Photos not tied to a location, which makes them almost impossible to verify or defend.
- A closed item with a before photo but no matching after photo from the same spot.
Questions people ask
- How many photos should a defect get?
- At least a pair — a wide establishing shot to locate it and a detail shot to prove the condition — plus a scale reference in the detail frame. When it's corrected, add an after photo from the same vantage.
- Why does the timestamp matter so much?
- Because a defect photo often anchors a timeline: when the condition first appeared, when it was found, when it was fixed. A timestamp captured at the moment of the shot, that couldn't be edited afterward, is what makes that timeline defensible.
