  • Coil face 'looks fine' from the front while the back rows are packed with cottonwood or grass clippings and the unit is fighting head pressure all afternoon.
  • Landscaping, a new fence or stored pallets crowded up against the unit, choking the airflow the coil needs to reject heat.
  • A condenser fan cycling on a bad motor or seized bearing, running one fan down all season while the other carries the load.
  • Charge judged by a single gauge glance instead of a proper subcooling or superheat reading, so a slow leak or an overcharge rides for another season.
  • Contactor points burned and pitted left in service, so the compressor eventually fails to pull in on a hot-day start and the call comes in as a no-cool.
  • Coil pressure-washed hard enough to lay the fins flat, trading a dirty coil for an airflow-starved one.
