Where each walk sits in the schedule

High-strength bolting special inspection checklisthigh-strength bolting
At fastener delivery, before installation begins, and at each connection during and after tightening — before it is covered or coated. Run by: A third-party or owner's-rep special inspector for structural steel, alongside the erector's bolt-up crew.
Structural welding special inspection checkliststructural welding
Before welding starts (qualifications and fit-up), during welding for critical joints, and at completion before coatings or fireproofing. Run by: A third-party or owner's-rep welding inspector, coordinating with the fabricator or erector's welding crew.
Cast-in-place concrete special inspection checklistcast-in-place concrete
Before the pour (reinforcement and embeds), at delivery (mix verification and sampling), and during placement and curing. Run by: A third-party or owner's-rep special inspector for concrete, with the placing crew and the testing lab.
Soils and foundations special inspection checklistsoils & foundations
At subgrade and bearing exposure, during fill placement and compaction, and throughout pile or pier installation. Run by: A third-party or owner's-rep geotechnical/special inspector, with the earthwork or foundation crew and the testing lab.
Structural masonry special inspection checkliststructural masonry
At material delivery, during laying and reinforcement placement, and at each grout lift and sampling. Run by: A third-party or owner's-rep special inspector for masonry, with the mason and the testing lab.
Sprayed fire-resistive materials (SFRM) special inspection checklistsprayed fireproofing
After the structure is accepted and the substrate is ready, during application, and before the assembly is enclosed. Run by: A third-party or owner's-rep special inspector for fire-resistive materials, with the applicator.

What most often sends special work back

  • Pretensioning claimed on a summary sheet with no photo of a marked or verified connection.
  • Faying surfaces coated or contaminated on a slip-critical connection that called for a clean surface.
  • Fastener assemblies mixed on site so the lot verified in pre-installation testing is not the one installed.
  • Welder qualification expired or not current for the position and process actually used.
  • Completed welds coated before the visual inspection and any required NDT were recorded.
  • Fit-up gaps and pre-heat left unverified on joints that called for them.
  • Reinforcement signed off after forms were closed, so cover and spacing could not be verified.
  • Test specimens taken and cured without the inspector present to witness the sampling.
