Embed plate

Also called: embed, embedment plate

An embed plate is a steel plate, usually with studs or bars welded to its back, set into the forms so it finishes flush with the concrete surface. It's a connection point cast in for the future — later a beam, brace, ledger or support gets welded or bolted to the exposed face. Because it's locked into the concrete on the day of the pour, its location, elevation and orientation have to be right then; there's no adjusting an embed once the concrete is hard.

Why it matters

An embed set out of position, tilted, or at the wrong elevation forces a field fix on the steel that connects to it — a stretched connection, an added plate, or coring and re-setting, none of them cheap. Embeds are also easy to knock loose during the pour if they're not braced, so they end up crooked or sunk.

What an inspector looks at

The pre-pour check is location, elevation, orientation and that the plate is fixed to the forms so the pour won't move it, with its anchors fully in the concrete and the face flush and clean. It's checked against the connection drawings, since the whole point is the piece that lands on it later.

RTI is photo-gated, so embeds are documented before the pour — each plate shown fixed in the forms in its correct position, the record that the connection point was placed right before concrete made it permanent.

Standards it's verified against

Knowing the term is step one. Proving it is the job.

RTI holds the submit button until every mandatory item is answered and the photos are attached, then chains the record so it can be proven untouched later.
