How to inspect a concrete pour
Concrete is the definition of a pour you can't take back. Everything that matters is set before the truck arrives, so the real inspection is the pre-pour hold point: formwork, reinforcement, embeds, and cover, all verified while you can still change them. Then you watch the placement and confirm the finish and cure.

Step by step
Verify formwork, lines, and grades
Check formwork for dimension, plumb, bracing, and tightness, and confirm it's set to the right lines and grades. Under-braced forms blow out mid-pour; leaky forms bleed paste and leave honeycomb.
Check reinforcement, spacing, and cover
Confirm bar size, grade, spacing, laps, and hooks match the drawings, that bars are tied and supported on chairs, and that concrete cover is maintained top, bottom, and sides. Cover is what protects the steel — too little and it corrodes; too much and it doesn't work.
Confirm embeds, sleeves, and blockouts
Anchor bolts, embed plates, sleeves, blockouts, and post-tensioning ducts have to be located and secured before the pour. Verify layout against the anchor-bolt and embed drawings — a mislocated anchor bolt is a field fix nobody wants.
Coordinate the special inspector and hold point
Where the work requires special inspection, confirm the special inspector is on site and has released the reinforcement before placement begins. The pre-pour is a hold point — the pour doesn't start until it's signed off.
Verify the mix and check the delivery tickets
Confirm the mix design matches the spec for the element, and check each truck's ticket for mix, water added, and elapsed time. Watch for water added on site beyond the design — it's the fastest way to lose strength.
Observe placement, consolidation, and test sampling
Watch that concrete is placed without segregation, vibrated to consolidate without over-vibrating, and not free-dropped from height. Confirm the testing lab takes slump, air, temperature, and cylinders at the required frequency.
Check finishing and curing
Verify the finish matches the spec — float, trowel, broom, or as-cast — and that curing starts on time by the specified method. A slab that dries too fast crazes and dusts; curing is not optional.
Document and log any nonconformance
Photograph rebar, embeds, and cover before the pour and the placement itself, and keep the delivery tickets and test reports with the record. Any cold joint, honeycomb, or out-of-tolerance element becomes a nonconformance for the engineer to disposition.
What gets missed
- Releasing the pour before the special inspector has actually verified and signed off the reinforcement.
- Letting extra water go into the mix on site, quietly dropping the strength the mix was designed for.
- Missing wrong cover or unsupported bars that sag out of position once concrete hits them.
- Skipping the anchor-bolt and embed layout check until steel erection finds them out of place.
- Not photographing the rebar and embeds before the pour — the only chance to prove what's inside.

- Why is the pre-pour inspection the one that matters?
- Because once the concrete is placed, the reinforcement, embeds, and cover are permanent. The pre-pour hold point is the last moment you can correct any of them, so it's inspected and signed off before a truck is called.
- Who verifies the concrete — the crew, QC, or a special inspector?
- All three have a role. The crew checks their own work, your QC runs the pre-pour walk and observes placement, and where the code requires it a special inspector verifies reinforcement and takes the samples. The engineer of record dispositions anything out of tolerance.
