How to inspect a fire sprinkler system
A fire sprinkler system is life-safety scope, and the tests that count — the hydrostatic test and the acceptance test — belong to the licensed fire protection contractor and the AHJ. Your walkthrough verifies against the approved drawings and documents the install, so the head that was moved under a duct or the hanger that was skipped gets caught before the contractor's test, not after a wall is closed over it.

Step by step
Verify the layout against the approved drawings
Walk the piping and head layout against the AHJ-approved sprinkler shop drawings and hydraulic calculations. Coverage, spacing and the location of every head should match what was approved, not what fit around the other trades.
Check pipe support and hangers
Piping should be supported and braced at the required spacing with listed hangers, with seismic bracing where the design calls for it. A run hung off another trade's strut or left unbraced is a flag for the contractor.
Confirm head type, position and clearance
Heads should be the type and temperature rating the design specifies, positioned for their spray pattern, with the clearance below them that the listing requires. Watch for heads blocked or crowded by ductwork and light fixtures added later.
Observe the hydrostatic test
The licensed contractor pressurizes the system to the required hydrostatic test pressure and holds it for the required period. Observe and photograph the gauge holding with no drop and no leaks — the contractor runs and certifies the test; you document that it held before cover.
Log penetrations and firestopping
Every pipe through a rated wall or floor needs its listed firestop system; record each penetration for the firestopping walk. Escutcheons and cover plates should be the listed assembly, not a field substitute.
Document the acceptance test and closeout
The final acceptance test — main drain, flow and supervisory alarm signals, and any interface with the fire alarm — is run by the contractor and witnessed by the AHJ. Collect the contractor's certified test and material certificates rather than signing off yourself.
What gets missed
- Assuming a walk-through covers the required hydrostatic and acceptance tests — those are the licensed contractor's, witnessed by the AHJ.
- Heads relocated to dodge a duct or fixture without the change routed back through the fire protection contractor and the calc.
- Missing seismic bracing where the design requires it, buried above a hard ceiling.
- Sprinkler pipe penetrations of rated assemblies left open for the firestopping walk.
- Covering piping before the hydro test is witnessed and its gauge photographed.
