How to inspect cold-formed metal framing
Cold-formed metal framing looks like light-gauge steel studs and behaves like structure, and the inspection is a pre-cover inspection in the same way wood framing is: once sheathing or drywall goes on, the gauge, the connections, and the bridging are hidden. Load-bearing and curtain-wall CFMF carries real load, so the member sizes, the screw and weld connections, and the details like deflection track and bridging all have to match the structural drawings before it's closed.

Step by step
Verify member size, gauge, and layout
Confirm stud and track depth, flange, and gauge match the structural drawings for each wall type, and that spacing and layout are correct. Light-gauge and heavy-gauge studs look alike on the rack — the wrong gauge in a load-bearing or high wall is a structural defect.
Check tracks, anchorage, and base connections
Verify top and bottom tracks are the right gauge, anchored to the structure at the specified type and spacing, and that the base connection matches the detail. Under-anchored track is the connection that lets a wall move or fail at its base.
Inspect stud-to-track and member connections
Confirm connections are made per the drawings — screw type, size, and count, or welds of the right size by qualified welders where welding is specified — and that screws are fully driven, not stripped or standing proud. Count the screws at critical connections; under-fastened connections are the most common CFMF defect.
Verify bridging, bracing, and blocking
Check that bridging or bracing is installed at the specified spacing and connected, and that blocking and backing for finishes, fixtures, casework, and handrails is in place. Bridging keeps the studs from rotating and buckling under load — missing rows are a hidden weakness.
Confirm deflection track and movement joints
Verify the deflection or slip track at the top of non-load-bearing walls provides the specified movement and that fasteners don't pin the studs against deflection. A stud screwed tight through a slotted deflection track defeats the joint and cracks the finish above.
Check openings, headers, jambs, and knee walls
At every opening confirm the header, jamb studs, and any built-up or boxed members match the drawings, and that the opening dimensions and reinforcement are right. Confirm parapet and knee-wall framing and its bracing at the roof.
Verify plumb, alignment, and coordination with MEP
Check walls for plumb and alignment within tolerance, and confirm MEP crews cut and reinforce web penetrations per the details rather than randomly notching structural members. Oversized or unreinforced holes in a bearing stud reduce its capacity.
Document and release for cover
Photograph connections, bridging, deflection track, and blocking against the checklist before sheathing or drywall, log any wrong gauge, under-fastened connection, or missing bridging as a nonconformance, and don't release the wall until it's cleared.

- The wrong stud gauge in a load-bearing or tall wall — hard to spot, easy to bury.
- Under-driven, stripped, or short-count screws at connections that were detailed for more.
- Missing bridging rows that let studs rotate and buckle under load.
- A deflection track pinned solid by fasteners, defeating the movement joint and cracking finishes.
- MEP penetrations cut oversize or unreinforced through structural studs.

- The logic is the same — verify members and connections before cover — but the details differ: gauge instead of grade, screws and welds instead of nails, bridging instead of blocking for lateral support, and deflection track for movement.
