- After surfaces are ready to receive paint and before the first coat is applied, once other trades have finished work in the area. Run by: The painting foreman checking their own prep crew, or the GC's superintendent before coating starts.

- After the primer or first coat has dried and before the second or finish coat is applied. Run by: The painting foreman or GC's superintendent checking the prime coat before scheduling final coats.

What most often sends painting work back
- Coating applied over substrate that hasn't been checked for moisture, leading to blistering or peeling later.
- Sanding dust and patch residue left on the surface, trapped under the first coat.
- Masking incomplete, leaving adjacent finishes and hardware exposed to overspray or drips.
- Holidays and thin spots in the prime coat covered by the next coat instead of corrected first.
- Caulk joints skipped or applied after the first coat, leaving visible gaps at trim and corners.
- Recoat times shortened, leading to lifting or poor adhesion of the next coat.
- Sheen or color variation between walls or between cans of the same specified color, visible in daylight.
- Cut lines at ceilings, trim and corners wavy or overlapping onto adjacent surfaces.
