Shotcrete inspection checklists

Shotcrete inspection checklists for the rough-in, final and punch walks: 3 free lists, 13 items and 22 photo requirements, each item naming what to look for and the photo that proves it. Work is commonly verified against ACI concrete practice; the edition in force is the AHJ's call on each project.

Where each walk sits in the schedule

Shotcrete rough-in inspection checklistrough-in
After reinforcement and embeds are placed and screeds or ground wires are set, before the first pass covers any of it. Run by: The GC's superintendent with the shotcrete foreman, releasing the wall or slope before the nozzle crew starts.
Shotcrete final inspection checklistfinal
After shooting and finishing are complete and initial cure has begun, before the surface is coated, plastered or hidden. Run by: The GC's superintendent with the shotcrete foreman, walking the finished surface before it's covered, tiled or backfilled.
Shotcrete punch checklistpunch
During closeout, after the surface has been sounded and defects flagged, before finishes or backfill go on. Run by: The shotcrete foreman on repair, or the GC's superintendent closing structural punch on the shot surface.

What most often sends shotcrete work back

  • Rebar tied tight to the substrate with no room for the nozzle to encase it, leaving voids behind the bar.
  • No ground wires or depth screeds set, so thickness is shot by eye and comes up thin between the high spots.
  • Nozzle crew never qualified on a test panel for this mix and orientation, so a poor gun technique goes straight onto the wall.
  • Rebound collected on ledges and reveals and shot over instead of removed, so a weak sandy layer ends up inside the section.
  • Thickness checked only where the depth gauges are and left thin in the field between them.
  • Cure walked away from after the first day, so a wall or slope surface-cracks as it dries out.
  • A drummy area skim-patched at the surface while the void behind it stays hollow.
  • Cold joint between day's work left as a hard ridge instead of feathered and bonded, telegraphing through the finish.
