Cold joint

A cold joint is an unplanned discontinuity in a concrete placement — a line where one lift or batch had begun to stiffen before the next was poured against it, so the two lifts don't knit into one monolithic mass. Unlike a control joint, nobody wants a cold joint; it's a defect that comes from a pour running out of pace, a delayed truck or a lift left too long. The seam is weaker and more permeable than sound concrete, which matters for both strength and water.

Why it matters

A cold joint is a path for water and a plane of weakness right where the concrete was supposed to be continuous — a real problem in walls holding back soil, tanks and anything meant to be watertight. It usually traces back to placement timing, so it's a scheduling and consolidation issue as much as a materials one.

What an inspector looks at

The check happens both during the pour — is placement keeping pace and each lift consolidated into the one below before it sets — and after strip, looking for the tell-tale horizontal line, honeycomb or seepage that says two lifts never bonded. Planned construction joints are prepped and keyed on purpose; a cold joint is the one nobody planned.

Because RTI closes items on a photo, the pour and the stripped surface are documented — placement progress caught in the moment and any suspect seam shot after forms come off, before a coating or backfill hides it.
