Fitness for purpose
Also called: fit for purpose, fit for intended use
Fitness for purpose is the harder question behind conformance: not only did the work get built to the spec, but does it perform the function it exists for? A membrane can be installed exactly per the detail and still let water through at a transition; a door can hang plumb and still fail to latch. Conformance asks whether the work matches the requirement; fitness for purpose asks whether that requirement, as built, delivers the intended result in the field.
Why it matters
A crew can pass every checklist item and still hand over something that does not work, because a detail was silent on the one condition that mattered or a substitution met the letter of the submittal but not its intent. Fitness for purpose is the reason a good inspector tests the assembly the way it will actually be used — flood-testing a shower pan, cycling a door, running a system under load — instead of stopping at a visual match.
It also frames how a builder talks to the design team. When an installed detail conforms but plainly will not perform, the field role is to observe the condition, document it and raise an RFI — not to quietly deviate or to accept a result that will come back as a warranty claim.
How it differs from conformance
Conformance is a match against a stated requirement; fitness for purpose is a match against the outcome that requirement was meant to produce. Most of the time they line up. The cases that matter are the ones where they split — the work conforms but does not function, or the work deviates slightly yet clearly performs — and those are the ones an inspector flags for a decision on the record.
