How to inspect a retaining wall
A retaining wall holds back earth and the water in it, and most retaining-wall failures are really drainage failures — hydrostatic pressure building behind a wall that had no way to relieve it. Whether it's cast-in-place, segmental block, or an MSE wall, the reinforcement, the drainage system, and the backfill are all covered as the wall goes up. So the inspection follows the build: foundation, wall, drainage, then backfill, each verified before the next buries it.
For the superintendent and QC manager verifying retaining walls against the structural and civil drawings and the geotechnical report, alongside the special inspector where required.
Step by step
Confirm the foundation, bearing, and layout
Verify the footing or leveling pad is at the right bearing stratum, elevation, and dimension, that the geotechnical engineer has approved the bearing where their sign-off governs, and that the wall is laid out to line and grade. A retaining wall founded on soft or wrong soil settles and rotates.
Verify reinforcement, dowels, and cover for cast-in-place
On a cast-in-place wall, confirm bar size, spacing, laps, hooks, and dowels into the footing match the drawings, and that cover is maintained against the earth and forms. Verify this at the pre-pour hold point with the special inspector where the work requires it — it's permanent once concrete is placed.
Confirm units, reinforcement, and geogrid for segmental and MSE walls
For a segmental or MSE wall, verify the block or panel, the leveling course, and that geogrid or soil reinforcement is the specified type, length, placement, and elevation, laid taut and connected per the design. The reinforcement is what makes the mass act as a wall — the wrong length or spacing is a hidden defect.
Inspect the drainage system behind the wall
Confirm the drainage aggregate, filter fabric, and the perforated drain pipe with a positive outlet are installed per the detail, and that weep holes or a drainage composite relieve water where the design calls for them. This is the system that keeps hydrostatic pressure off the wall — skip it and the wall fails.
Verify backfill material and compaction in lifts
Check that the backfill is the specified free-draining material, placed and compacted in the specified lift thickness, and that compaction near the wall uses the right equipment so it doesn't overstress the wall. Confirm density testing where required. Over-compacting against the wall bows it.
Confirm movement joints, coping, and the top of wall
Verify control and expansion joints, coping or cap units, and the top-of-wall condition, plus any guardrail or fence attachment and its blocking. Confirm the finished grade and surface drainage carry water away from the top of the wall.
Document each stage before it's buried
Photograph the foundation, reinforcement or geogrid, and the drainage system before backfill covers them, keep the pre-pour and density records in the file, and log any missing drainage, wrong reinforcement, or out-of-plumb wall as a nonconformance to close before it's buried.
What gets missed
- No drainage system or a blocked outlet behind the wall, letting hydrostatic pressure build and push it over.
- Geogrid or reinforcement the wrong length, spacing, or elevation, so the reinforced mass never forms.
- Reinforcement and cover unverified before a cast-in-place pour buries them for good.
- Over-compacting the backfill against the wall with heavy equipment and bowing it forward.
- Founding the wall on soft or unapproved subgrade, so it settles and rotates.
Questions people ask
- Why do so many retaining walls fail at the drainage?
- Because a wall designed to hold soil isn't designed to hold water too. When the drainage aggregate, filter fabric, and drain pipe aren't installed or the outlet is blocked, water builds behind the wall and the hydrostatic pressure can exceed what the wall was designed for — so the drainage check is as important as the reinforcement.
- Who signs off a retaining wall?
- Your QC walk verifies the work against the drawings, the geotechnical engineer approves bearing and often the backfill, and a special inspector verifies reinforcement or geogrid where the code requires it. The engineer of record dispositions anything out of tolerance. Record all of it before the wall is buried.
