Geotechnical engineer

Also called: geotech, soils engineer

The geotechnical engineer studies what's under the site — soil, rock, groundwater — and turns it into the requirements the foundation and earthwork have to meet: bearing capacity, compaction, fill, and how the ground is prepared before anything is built on it. Their report and recommendations feed the structural design and govern how the site is graded and backfilled. Their authority comes from the design contract and the project's inspection program, so what they specify and verify is set by that scope, not assumed.

Why it matters

Everything above ground rides on the ground being right. If a bearing surface isn't what the geotech assumed, or fill isn't compacted to spec, the problem doesn't show up until it's expensive — a slab that cracks or a footing that settles. Getting the subsurface verified before you build on it is far cheaper than fixing it after.

The geotech's recommendations often trigger inspections of their own — soils, compaction, and bearing verification before foundations go in — that run alongside the building department's inspections rather than replacing them.

What proves it

Compaction and density test results, bearing verification, and observation reports tied to the specific area and elevation are the record. Photos of the prepared subgrade, footings and reinforcement before concrete covers them make the below-grade work verifiable long after the site is finished and nothing can be seen.

Knowing the term is step one. Proving it is the job.
