Backing and bond break

Backer rod sized to the joint and set to the right depth, or bond-breaker tape at the joint bottom so the bead bonds on two faces only.
Substrate prep

Substrate clean and dry at the joint faces
Joint faces free of dust, old sealant, form release and moisture, wiped and dried before anything is applied.

Primer applied per the sealant's instructions on substrates that call for it, allowed to flash before the bead.

- Joint too shallow or too wide, so the bead sets at the wrong width-to-depth ratio and tears the first time the joint moves.
- Backer rod skipped or pushed in with a wet finger, letting sealant grab the joint bottom and bond on three sides.
- Primer called for on the substrate and skipped, so the bead peels off a smooth surface within weeks.
