Solar PV inverter quarterly maintenance checklist

A quarterly PV inverter round is short on purpose: it catches the wear items that fail between annual services. This checklist is sized for a tech with a phone. Every item says what to look at and the photo that proves the round happened. Work is commonly verified against NEC (NFPA 70), manufacturer's published instructions. Confirm the edition your authority having jurisdiction has adopted.

Who runs it

The PV or electrical service tech on the quarterly round.

When in the schedule

Every quarter, energized during daylight so the unit is producing and cooling faults show under real load.

The checklist

Every item, and the photo that proves it

The photo count on each row is what RTI would require before the item can be submitted. Copy the list as is, or load it into RTI and let the gate enforce it.

01

Status and production

  • Status indicators and event log reviewed

Fault and warning history read from the display or portal, not just the front light, recurring trips noted for follow-up.

    1 photo
  • Output compared against the other units on site

Instantaneous output read and compared against the other inverters or strings under the same sky, any low outlier flagged.

02

Cooling

  • Cooling fans, heatsink and filters checked

Fans running, heatsink fins and intake filters clear, no dust blanket driving the unit into thermal derate.

03

Enclosure

  • Enclosure sealed and mounting secure

Cover gaskets and cable entries sealed, no moisture, corrosion or pest signs inside, mounting and conduit tight to the wall.

What usually sends this back

The failures are almost always the evidence, not the work

  • Green status light taken as healthy while the event log shows repeated ground-fault or arc-fault trips clearing themselves.
  • One inverter quietly underproducing next to its neighbors on the same roof, never caught because outputs aren't compared side by side.
  • Intake filter blinded with pollen so the unit derates in the afternoon heat and no one connects the derate to the filter.

Run it with the Photo Gate

A checklist nobody can submit half-finished

Load this list into RTI, stick a QR tag on the area it covers, and the submit button stays locked until every mandatory item is answered and the 4 required photos exist. Approved walks roll into a branded turnover package with a tamper-evident record behind every line.

Common questions

What does this solar pv inverter quarterly checklist cover?
4 items across 3 sections, covering status and production, cooling, enclosure. Each item spells out what the person walking the job is actually looking for, not just a box to tick.
Who should run this inspection?
The PV or electrical service tech on the quarterly round.
When in the schedule should this walk happen?
Every quarter, energized during daylight so the unit is producing and cooling faults show under real load.
Why does every item ask for a photo?
4 of the 4 items call for photo evidence. A checklist answer without the photo is a claim; the photo is what makes the record worth something in a dispute and lets a reviewer approve work without re-walking the job.
What most often fails a solar pv inverter quarterly inspection?
Green status light taken as healthy while the event log shows repeated ground-fault or arc-fault trips clearing themselves. One inverter quietly underproducing next to its neighbors on the same roof, never caught because outputs aren't compared side by side. Intake filter blinded with pollen so the unit derates in the afternoon heat and no one connects the derate to the filter.
Can I use this checklist in RTI?
Yes. Start a free RTI workspace, build this list as a checklist, and the Photo Gate holds the submit button until every mandatory item is answered and its photos are attached. Approved inspections roll into a branded turnover package with a tamper-evident audit trail.
