How to run a follow-up phase inspection
The follow-up phase is the third of the three phases of control — the recurring inspections that run while the rest of a feature is built out. Its job is to confirm the work still meets the benchmark set in the initial phase and has not drifted as crews, shifts, weather, or schedule pressure change. Follow-up is where quality is actually held or lost, because it is the phase that repeats. This guide covers running follow-up so drift surfaces early and gets corrected before it multiplies.

Set the frequency from the plan and the risk
The quality control plan or ITP should state how often you return during build-out. Tie the interval to the work's risk and repetition — a fast, repetitive install needs tighter follow-up than a slow, low-consequence one — and hold to it even when the schedule tightens.
Compare against the initial-phase benchmark
Follow-up is a comparison, not a fresh judgment. Hold the work against the standard agreed and photographed in the initial phase, so the question is simply whether the feature still matches what was accepted.
Watch the seams where drift starts
Pay attention to what changed since the last check — a new crew, a different shift, a substituted lot, a temperature swing. Workmanship drifts hardest exactly when the conditions that produced the benchmark change.
Check hold points and required tests as the work reaches them
Confirm the feature is hitting its hold points and witness points as build-out passes them, and that required tests are run and recorded. A follow-up round is also when you verify nothing advanced past a control point without its sign-off.
Write up and correct deficiencies where they surface
A deficiency found in follow-up gets documented, corrected, and re-verified before the crew repeats it down the run. Catching a slow slide at one check is the whole reason the phase recurs.
Log each round so the feature reads as one record
Date each follow-up, record what you checked and the condition, and attach photos. The string of follow-up records is what proves the feature stayed in control from the benchmark through completion.
